Amanuensis Monday - Birth Certificate for Olena Marie Haner (1903-1996)

Dear FOLKS,

Here it is the beginning of a new work week for many people and I want to start this week off by transcribing a document that is important to my family research.
Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks guys.
Transcribing helps me to learn what a document contains. I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over an item; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. Transcribing helps me to slow down and "smell the roses," and to capture all aspects of the paper in hand.
The document I am transcribing today is the Birth Certificate for Oline Marie Haner, daughter of Warren W. and Anna Ostrom Haner. Oline was my paternal grandmother and she would spell her name as Olena Marie. This is truly a treasure as I have the original and I want to share it with others, so will do that here. This original is near ready to be in two pieces, it was folded and unfolded so many times before I received it that it is very fragile. From Olena, from her, it first went to her son Lloyd Johnson and then to me. I am so very lucky to have it.

For the most part this document is written in Danish. This branch of my family attended a Lutheran church and while Olena's birth was in Roberts County, South Dakota, her mother Anna and others of Anna's family were members of the United Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake, Grant County, Minnesota and that is where Olena was baptized. I will transcribe this document which is a form to fill-in the blanks and then I will translate it. The hand-written entries I will show as italicized bold-type letters for clarity. Any of my comments will be in square-brackets [ ].

The original document is printed using black and red inks, and the paper measures 7-3/8 inches wide by 4-0 inches tall. The red border is made up of three-leaf clusters, joined together surrounding the document. The back is blank.

This was a fun document to prepare for you. There was a little extra twist with the translating, put once I discovered it was Danish, instead of the expected Norwegian, I got along pretty well with Google Translate. Please send along to me any mistakes so I can correct my work for the next reader.

The listed godparents and their relationship to Oline Marie were:
Teoline Ostrem [Toline Ostrom] - Grandmother [mother's mother]
Oline Ostrem [Ostrom] - Aunt  [mother's sister]
Oscar Ostrem [Ostrom] - Uncle  [mother's brother]

This document helps to prove that the "Delayed Birth Certificate" on file in South Dakota's state archives is wrong. It states incorrectly that her birth date was August 1, 1903.  Today's Birth Certificate is an ORIGINAL document, containing PRIMARY information, as DIRECT evidence. The "Delayed Birth Record" was published on 26 Jun 1942 and can not equate to being as reliable even though it is the "official" version. Given the 1942 date, it may have been a requirement that Olena provide a copy of her birth certificate to her employer. It is about this time that Olena began to work for Pacific Car and Foundry, in Renton, Washington; a factory that made railroad cars and heavy military equipment (i.e. tanks) as their part of the World War II support effort.

South Dakota did not require birth certificates until 1905 and full compliance wasn't achieved until 1932. So many requested that a delayed birth certificate be put on file for future needs of obtaining a birth certificate when one wasn't generated immediately following their birth.

The word Treenige / Triune is defined as "three in one" and while it isn't a frequently used word, with further research we learn it means -- of or relating to the Trinity -- Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Since this is a church originated document that makes complete sense.

I am pleased that you stopped by to learn about this document. See you next time.
