Amanuensis Monday - Marriage Record for Reinert Emerson and Dora Nilson

Dear FOLKS,

Hi to all and happy Monday!

Today I am excited to share with you the ORIGINAL OFFICIAL record of Reinert Emerson and Dora Nilson's marriage. This is so special because, previous to this, I had only a modern-typed copy that the kind folks at Meeker County had transcribed and sent to me last month; but it had conflicts with the information we already had.

Today's document I am transcribing is a digitized copy of a page from the microfilmed marriage register book that is a "fill-in the blanks form" that was completed by the county clerk at the time the original document was filed. As I transcribe this, I plan to use bold-italics for all that was handwritten and I'll place my comments in square [ ] brackets.

Sources:

1.) Meeker County, Minnesota, "Marriage Book G; 300, Reinert I. Emerson and Dora Nelson, 1898, recorded license and certification on microfilm; Meeker County Treasurer's Office, Litchfield.

2.) Minnesota Legislature, The Legislative Manual of the State of Minnesota, Compiled for the Legislature of 1901, (St. Paul: printed by The Pioneer Press Co. under supervision of Chas. C. Whitney, Supt. State Printing, 1901) 411; digital images, Google Books (http://books.google.com ; accessed 5 November 2016).

It is fun to present this copy of the original recorded certificate. Recently I wrote an article about the wedding of Reinert and Dora where I explained a conflict between the Minnesota Official Marriage System index (MOMS) and a certificate transcribed copy of this document dated 3 October, 2016 that I had received from the Meeker County Treasurer clerk's office. You can read about that here.

This document clarifies that conflict. The differences were:

 Corrected                   Error
Reinert I. Emerson          Reinert J. Emmerson
23 July 1898                23 July 1897

note: Dora's name was left as NELSON, there were clearly no NILSONs on the document. This was acceptable to me as well as the records for Dora and her entire family, parents and siblings, are a mixture of Nilson and Nelson.

The clerk's office shared with me that they had corrected the MOMS database. This was good news to me as now any researchers that look there will have an easier time finding the right entry. I am pleased for clerk's prompt action to my request.

I also make it a habit to query Google to look for the names of the officials that had signed the document. In this case I found that the names were listed in a book that was printed frequently for State Legislature members. In the case it was the "The Legislative Manual of the State of Minnesota, Compiled for the Legislature of 1901." It listed the Clerk was Hiram S. Angell and the Judge was Victor H. Harris. This also corrected that copy that I was given in early October.

Readers that print out these articles, may want to mark up the 12 October 2016 story "The Emersons : a Wedding and a Family." The corrections may seem minor but there was a number of them included there.

Happy Monday to you all .... Hope you have a good week.
