A Marriage for Peder Christian Nilson (1827-1888)

Ed's Day Wednesday

Dear FOLKS,

The week I want to continue with the life story of me late cousin, Ed Ostrom's ancestor, Peder Christian Nilson. Peder was my cousin's mother's mother's father, more easily one of Ed's great-grandfathers.

Last week, I shared the early days of Peder's life, including record of his birth, baptism and more. If you would like to read about that portion of Peder's life, click on this link. Peder was born on the family farm near Råna, Nordland, Norway. The family farm was called Elvebakken.

On 30 September 1860, Peder would marry a young widow, Gurine Marie Tomasdatter who had two small children. Her husband had died in November, 1859 by drowning, when the small boat he was sailing, capsized on the way home from work, where he had worked as a blacksmith on a sloop. Although there is within Ed's notes an alternate theory that the accident occurred while fishing, when a storm came up.

Gurine was the daughter of Tomas Christophersen Altermark and Marit Mattisdatter. She was born 05 January 1832 in the same area of northern Norway as where Peder was born.

In 1866, Peder and his family picked up what belongings they thought they could manage on a long trip and left Norway for America. Here is the entry in the church register about their plans to leave the district.

This is where we will leave Peder and his family making their journey to their new home in America.
