Amanuensis Monday - Land Patent of Oscar Ostrom (1884-1973)

Dear FOLKS,

This is my first attempt at writing a post using the weekly theme of Amanuensis Monday. This writing theme was the brain-child of Genealogy Blogger [Genea-blogger] John Newmark, who writes the transylvaniandutch blog.

According to John, amanuensis means: "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another."  Google also tells us that this word is a noun that describes "a literary or artistic assistant, in particular one who takes dictation or copies manuscripts." Thanks John for getting us started, however so long ago.

There are a number of reasons transcribing has proved to be useful. It may be to have in written-format the proceedings from a courtroom, contents of interviews, etc. or in typed-format handwritten documents, especially those difficult to read. For me, I think it is a tool to use that helps me learn the contents of a document. I have the tendency to read over something without really absorbing the details. I find if I write out the words seen on the face of the document, then I learn more of what it contains.

I also want to thank Randy Seavers of Genea-Musings and Jenny Lanctot of Are My Roots Showing for their inspiration on article formatting and providing such good examples that help to show me how it is done.

Today, I am transcribing the land patent awarded to Oscar Ostrom on 02 April 1908.  This document was found on the Bureau of Land Management's - General Land Office Records website http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx; that I accessed on 16 February 2016.
