I am starting off another work week by transcribing a document that is important to my family research. This is a record I didn't think I would ever find; so yes, I did the genealogy "Happy Dance" again. Why so happy? I had found the marriage record of my great-grandparents; my father's paternal grandparents.
Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks guys.
Fortunately for me as I followed some Ancestry.com's shaky-leaf hints for the birth records of some children, I decided to look through this church register to see what all it contained. This set of records is part of the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church records. This a new and fairly large set of indexed digitized microfilm records from numerous Lutheran churches that were gathered from 1875-1940.
I have always known my great-grandfather as William Johnson, after all my father was named after his grandfather. Some years ago I discovered on Wm's death certificate that it named his father as Christen Jorgensen. So here I had a name conflict. Over past recent months I have been breaking down a Danish brick-wall and collecting information solving this conflict. I now know that at birth my great-grandfather was born Christian Vilhelm Jørgensen, the son of Hans Jørgensen and Lovise Vilhelmine Pedersdatter. This document provides evidence that William Johnson had indeed used the name Wilhelm Jorgensen while an adult. I am not concerned about seeing the varied use of ö or ø in Jorgensen. It was a confusing time as how to things, especially names, were written.
Over time it is my plan to share more with you on how that brick wall came tumbling down.
To get back on track here, once again I cannot follow the appearance as closely as I would like. In order to keep the font to a size that is readable, I need to change the horizontal layout into a vertical list. I will present the handwritten information in italics. Also this document is a combination of English and Norwegian; I am trying my best at translation, but I could be wrong. The translations and my comments are presented in square brackets [ ]. My Norwegian-speaking followers are welcome to post corrections in the Comments area. Since there is only a little in Norwegian, I hope I have it right.
