Amanuensis Monday - Land Patent for Jacob Haner (1801-1864)

Dear FOLKS,

I am starting off another work week by transcribing a document that is important to my research into the landholdings of family members. Today I transcribe Land Patent Certificate #2603 that was issued in 1837 to Jacob Haner, for acreage in McLean County, Illinois.

Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks guys.

I hope that working through transcribing documents that are important to my family's history will help to to recall the fine details they contain. I have a tendency to gloss over important bits of information in my excitement of the find.

This is a form filled out primarily by handwritten information. I will present the handwritten information in bold-italics to help provide clarity. Fields that are left blank on the original will also be left blank on the transcription. My comments will show with square brackets [ ].

Jacob Willis Haner (1801-1864) was my 4x great uncle. Last Monday I transcribed a document from his probate record. You can find that article here.

There were a number of Haners who were issued land patents on the same day as the one I transcribed here, 20 March 1837. They may have traveled to Danville, Illinois as a group, at least that is what my imagination has pictured. The group was made up of Jacob Haner, Isaac Haner, John Haner and William Haner. Can you imagine? All these related Haners walking into the Land Office at the same time.

You too can take a look at these land records if you like. Go to the Bureau of Land Management website at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx# for a look. Choose Illinois in the "State" field, McLean in the "County" field and then enter Haner in the "Last Name" field. Next press the "Search Patents" button at the bottom.  A list with eleven entries will return. Choose the blue entries in the Accession column. A new window opens that has a map on it. Click on the tab that is labeled "Patent Image" and you will open the page containing the certificate(s) that each man was issued. This is a free website, so go exploring.
