Here it is the beginning of a new work week for many people and I want to start this week off by transcribing a document that is important to my family research. This is a new-to-me document just located this past week by my cousin Dave. A special thank you to Dave for volunteering to look this record up for me.
Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks guys.
Transcribing helps me to learn what a document contains. I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over an item; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. The excitement of the find overshadows the importance of learning all of the details. Transcribing helps me to slow down and "smell the roses."
The document I am transcribing today is a Warranty Deed that was created when my paternal grandmother, Olena M. Johnson (nee' Haner), purchased land for a chicken ranch shortly after the death for her first husband, Alfred M. Johnson (b. 1893-d. 1931). Later, during World War II there was a local housing shortage in the greater Seattle, Washington area. It was at this time the "chicken coop," a building that Olena used to house her chickens for the family business, was transformed into three apartments of varying sizes. I can remember living in one of these apartments for a while until I was 6 years old. I am very curious about this land and in order to learn of the legal description of this property, I needed this deed. I now share it with you.

Additional comments:
My next step to learning more about Olena's property is to study land maps of a similar timeframe. My thought is that I will learn a lot of the layout of the buildings that existed there if I see a plat map or possibly an aerial photo. Olena owned this land until in the 1950s so I have several years to work with. I will continue to share my discoveries as this project progresses. Hope yours is a good week. Thank you for stopping by.
