I am starting off another work week by transcribing a document that is important to my family research. My choice for today is the Declaration of Citizenship that was completed for Toline "Lena" Ostrom, my 2x great grandmother. I found this document within a homestead land record file that Lena had completed in Roberts County, South Dakota.
I am a related to Lena Ostrom as follows:
- Toline "Lena" G. Paulson, who married Olaus O. Ostrom,
- their daughter Anna Ostrom, who married Warren Warner Haner,
- their daughter Olena Marie Haner, who married Alfred Johnson,
- their son, William Richard Johnson, who married Marilyn Eileen Brown,
- their daughter, me
- Toline "Lena" G. Paulson, who married Olaus O. Ostrom,
- their son Oscar Ostrom, who married Anna Tomine Brekke
- their son Edwin "Tom" Ostrom, who married Alice Viola Emerson
- their son, Ed
I hope that working through transcribing documents that are important to my family's history will help to to recall the fine details they contain. I have a tendency to gloss over important bits of information in my excitement of the find.
This is a form filled out primarily by typed-in information. Any fields that are left blank on the original will also be left blank on the transcription. If I make any comments these will show with square brackets [ ].

1.) Lena Ostrom (Roberts County) homestead file, final certificate no. 21290, Watertown, South Dakota, Land Office; Land Entry Papers, 1800-1908; Record Group 49: Records of the Bureau of Land Management; National Archives, Washington, D.C.; Declaration of Citizenship issued by Roberts County, South Dakota in 1902 to Lena Ostrom.
I notice that the form that was completed for Lena's admission as a citizen was printed assuming the applicant would be a male. Lena must have been an independent person to pursue becoming a U.S. citizen when most applicants were male.
The court's clerk wrote Lena's surname as O S L R O M until the third and final portion of this declaration; at that point her name was written correctly O S T R O M. I am glad at the important portion her name was correct. It appears to me that the clerk either didn't cross his "Ts" or was copying from a document that contained what he thought were "Ls."
I hope you enjoyed today's post and that your week has had a good start. Thank you for joining me here.
