Amanuensis Monday - Affidavit of Name Change for Oscar Peder Stavaas (1887-1977)

Dear FOLKS,

This week's transcription project for Amanuensis Monday is the name change affidavit form for Oscar Peder Stavaas. This document is found in a United States Passport Applicant folder for Oscar.

I found this to be an unusual document, as such I wanted to share it with you. This is the first name change document I have found. Oscar Stavaas was an interesting person in many aspects. He would become a Lutheran minister and eventually a foreign missionary. His devotion and occupation would find him in many far places, including Madagascar.

Oscar was my cousin Ed Ostrom's second cousin 2x removed.

    Their relationship is as follows:
  • Ed Ostrom > Tom Ostrom > Anna T. Brekke > Anna Stavaas
  • Oscar Stavaas > Ole Olsen Stavos
Anna Stavaas (1853-1931) and Ole O. Stavos (1856-1937) were siblings.

This is a typed document with signatures of individuals at its closure. The information that is handwritten is included in bold, italicized, red font.

Oscar Stavaas, having first been duly sworn, deposes and says: that he is a resident of the City of Hillsboro, County of Traill, and State of North Dakota; that he was born in Ottertail County, in the State of Minnesota, on the 18th day of January, 1887; that his father’s full name is Ole O. Stavos; that after the affiant had entered the High School and College, he changed the name Stavos to Stavaas, owing to the circumstance that the name Stavaas is the true Norwegian name instead of Stavos; that affiant is informed and believes that his father adopted the name Stavos instead of Stavaas on account of the difficulty of pronunciation of the name Stavaas.

Your affiant further deposes and says: that he is the same and identical person named in that certain certified copy of birth registration in Ottertail County, State of Minnesota, number 343, registered on the 28th day of May, 1887 in said County; that said certified copy of birth certificate is attached to this affidavit and made a part hereof.

Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks guys.

Transcribing helps me to learn what a document contains. I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over an item; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. Transcribing helps me to slow down; to capture all aspects of the paper in hand. It also gives me a better opportunity to share the document with you.

I hope that your week has had a good start. Thank you for stopping by today and letting me share this document with you.
