A Young Toline G. Paulson (1846-1934)

Ed's Day Wednesday

Dear FOLKS,

This week we'll continue to learn Toline Gunnulsdatter Paulson. I have been following the Names List of my late cousin Edwin Ostrom's genealogy, using the Ahnentafel numbering system. Toline is No. 9 on Ed's list or his father's father's mother, perhaps easier to understand her as one of his great-grandmothers. Toline was one of my 2x great-grandmothers.

Our first article about Toline described her timeline, vital statistics and an overview of her family. You can find that article here.

daughter Anna Malene Ostrom Haner (right). Earliest
known photograph of both individuals. (ca. 1900)

From the collection of Edwin J. Ostrom.

Last week, I told that Toline was born on the Trasekjær farm in Telemark County, Norway. This is the farm that Toline mentions as her place of birth in an interview that she participated in a few months before her death in 1934. A closer look at the Birth and Baptism record from the Lunde parish in Bø Prestegjeld (church district) tells that Toline was born at the Svenskerud farm. This farm is a few miles south of the town of Lunde.

birth and baptism entry for Toline G. Paulsen (No. 30) on
page number 141.

The details of this record tell:

No. 30
Stated date of Birth: 13 March 1846
Date of Baptism: 29 March 1846
Name of Child: Toline Gunnuldsd. [Gunnuldsdatter]
Birth: Legitimate
Parents: Farmer Gunnuld Paulsen and Gunnild Johnsd [Johnsdatter] who lived at Svenskerud, u Bieva Lunde
Godparents: Martha Jensd. [Jensdatter] Saga, Margith Johnsd. [Johnsdatter] Sættendal, John Tollefsen Sættendal, Even Wellesen Saga, Tollef Johnson Sættendal

Tolines' older brothers and sister (Paul, John and Else) were all born at the Lunde Farm and her younger brothers and sisters (Ingeborg x2, Halvor x2 and Tollef) were all born at the Trasekjær farm. The parish register is very clear in what is written. So at this point it is unknown why in 1846, Toline was the only child born on the Svenskerud farm. I hope to obtain a copy of the Lunde area bygdebok, (farm book), that describes the genealogy within the area's farm families. It is hopeful the farm book will help us to understand. I hope to have a chance to see this book soon.

We do not know if Toline had a formal education. It is thought that she would be learning cooking, sewing, spinning, knitting, cleaning and all the things that it takes to care for a household full of children.

Toline would not ignore her church studies as she was confirmed at the Lunde parish church when she was age 15. Here is an image of that record.

About 1866, Toline's older brother Paul would immigrate to the United States. Now and then he would write home telling of the new opportunities he has, encouraging others to to join him.  In the spring of 1872, Toline would decide to join the Halvor and Mari Bekhuus. Toline would tell us later that their last name is Hanta, at this time I am unsure of the connection Toline had with this family. Page 176 from the parish register tells that they will be leaving the district for America on 2 April 1872. They make up a party of six individuals, husband, wife, three children and Toline.  Here is the church register telling of their plans.

This group would travel to Skien, Norway and would depart on the Bark Rjukan 7 April 1872, headed for Quebec, Canada, across the Atlantic Ocean and sailing up the St. Lawrence River. What an adventure. A single woman traveling to a new country in a far away land. I am sure she was hoping that her brother Paul was right when he said that America and especially Minnesota was a land of opportunity.

Thank you for joining me this week. Hope you enjoyed our story today.
