Today I am transcribing the records that were created for the marriage between Peter A. Mahlum and Gunnild P. Ostrom. This record set is new to me, seeing it for the first time yesterday. In 2016, Ancestry.com added "North Dakota Marriage Records, 1877-1929" database with images to its collection. Since it is a new discovery, in my excitement, I wanted to share it with you.
Gunnild Pauline Ostrom (1886-1911) was the daughter of Olaus O. Ostrom and Toline G. Paulson; seventh of ten children to that couple. Gunnild would marry Peter Anton Mahlum (1873-1972) the son of norwegians Amund Pedersen Mahlum and Sigrid Amundsdatter.

Record of Marriage for Peter A. Mahlum and Gunild O. Ostrum, page 88
Now we have it Peter and Gunnild's wedding took place on 24 April 1900. It also shows that Gunnild was a minor and was age 16 (or born in 1884). This part of the information muddies what I have for her birthdate. Her baptism was held in 1894 and it says she was born on 18 April 1886. If the 1886 date is correct then she was 14 when they married. Folks of the time were very loose with both dates and spelling. Did the family members want to hide just how young she really was? This marriage record opened up questions as to just when Gunnild was born.
I already have a record made out when she was baptised. It is too bad that there was such a long time between her birth and baptism stated on this document, normally the span if time is in days, or weeks... in this case it was 6 years. I also have her 1911 obituary that says she was 25 years old when she died. And a photograph of her headstone engraved with a birthdate of 18 April 1886.
I am presently sticking with my current thinking that Gunnild was born in 1886 and was 14 when she married Peter, but I will continue to look for additional evidence for when she was born. Gunnild was cousin Ed's great aunt; my 2x great aunt.
Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks guys.
Transcribing helps me to learn what a document contains. I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over an item; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. Transcribing helps me to slow down and "smell the roses," and to capture all aspects of the paper in hand.
Wishing you a good day and a great week. It's a pleasure to have you stop by.
