Amanuensis Monday - Obituary for Maria (Julson) Johnson (1863-1933)

Dear FOLKS,

Today's Amanuensis Monday project is to transcribe the obituary of my father's grandmother; or my father's father's mother, more easily stated as my great-grandmother.

While living in Lake Preston, Maria Julson, a maiden of 28 years old would marry widower William Christian Johnson; together Maria and Bill would have 7 children, with 6 of them becoming adults. She would also provide the love, care and nurturing of Bill's two surviving children from his first marriage.

About the time Maria's youngest child was old enough for school, the family would leave South Dakota to homestead in Ward County, North Dakota; after a few years farming, they would move into the village of Douglas, ND where the family owned and operated the Douglas Garage and provided the town's electricity, through generators. Then in 1930, Maria and Bill and some of their children and grandchildren would leave North Dakota for Kent, Washington where they began a chicken farm.

Sadly, Maria lived only a short time after this last big move. She hardly had time to see her children and their families settled into their own places in and near Kent. She would die on 07 January 1933 from metastasized uterine cancer.

Here is her obituary...

1.) "Mrs. Maria Johnson," obituary, The Kent Advertiser-Journal, Kent, Washington, USA, 12 January 1933. Renton Highland Library, a branch of the King County Library System, 2902 NE 12th St, Renton, WA 98056, microfilm lookup completed by this researcher in 2004.

To clarify the list of children's names as listed in the article:

Son "Hans" - Hans Frederick Johnson
Son "H.W." - Henry Walter Johnson
Son "K.L." - Knute Lawrence Johnson
Daughter "Mrs. L. Frettum" - Louise Gurine Johnson, who had married/divorced John Frettem.
Daughter - "D.E. Martin" - Ruth Amanda Johnson, who had married Delmas Earl Martin
Stepdaughter - "O. Freten" - Anna Marie "Molly" Johnson, who had married Ole Tveten
Deceased son - "Alfred" - Alfred Miram Johnson

It is not known why Maria's stepson Harold Carl Johnson wasn't included in the list of family members. Perhaps just an oversight at the moment.

Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks guys.

Transcribing helps me to learn what a document contains. I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over an item; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. Transcribing helps me to slow down; to capture all aspects of the paper in hand. It also gives me a better opportunity to share the document with you.

Thank you for stopping by today and letting me share this newspaper article with you. I also hope that your week has had a good start. And as always, I hope you have a great day.
