Ed's Day Wednesday
Dear FOLKS,
Once again I am reporting back to you what I have learned about my late cousin Ed Ostrom's family members. In recent weeks we have been learning the story of Inger Tobine Emerson née Tallachsdatter; one of Ed's great-grandmothers, his mother's father's mother.
Inger was born in Nes, Vest-Agder, Norway on 26 November 1836, the daughter of Tollach Sigbjornsen and Ingeborg Christoffersdatter, her birth happening on the family's Seland farm. I wrote about her childhood and early days recently and that you can read by clicking here.
She would marry first Ole Atlaksen Lindeland on 20 April 1855. Ole was a young man also from the Nes area and they would, only 20 days later announce they would leave Norway and travel to America. This chapter in Inger's life, including her children with Ole can be read by clicking here. Two of their children lived through the harshness of early life at that time, then Ole died of typhoid fever in June of 1865.
In September of 1867, widow Inger married (second) Raymond Emerson. Raymond was also from Nes and he too was aboard the same ship as Inger and Ole when they immigrated to America. Raymond had stayed in contact with his friends during the intervening time. Click here to read of Raymond's story. Inger and Raymond would move to a quarter-section of land they homesteaded in Irving Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota to raise Inger's daughters Josephine Benedikt Lindeland and Anne Tonette "Nettie" Lindeland. Here they would farm and begin to have children of their own.

Our newly married couple would work their farm and have six children. Let me share with you some of the information we have learned about their children. To begin with, all of the Emerson children were born and grew up on the family farm...
Ole Tobias Emerson - Ole Tobias was born on 23 October 1868. There is an entry in a book about Kandiyohi County history that mentions Ole Tobias. It tells of Ole Tobias being one of two children being the first born of Norwegian parentage in Irving Township. The other, a baby girl, was Ingeborg Andrea Benson, daughter of Benjamin Christian Benson and Oline Tallachsdatter. This couple we have seen mentioned in our stories before; Oline was Inger Emerson's older sister. The parents of these two babies were related and also next door neighbors. Unfortunately it would come about that baby Ingeborg would live only two weeks. Throughout his life Ole Tobias would occasionally be mentioned as the first Norwegian baby born in Irving Township. As he grew, he learned to be a farmer and he would remain on the family the farm, working first for his parents and then for himself. On 24 March 1894, he would marry first, Matilde Sofie Gregersen and they would have ten children: Inga Regina (1895-1910), George Severine (1896-1976), Oluf Melin (1898-1955), Edna Lovise (1899-1990), Ruben Conrad (1901-1986), Lillie Agnette (1903-1995), Edwin Palmer (1905-1991), Alice Viola (1906-2009), Jenness "Jim" Arnold (1908-1988), and Raymond Walter (1910-1984). Matilde would pass away four months after their last child arrived; she died in December, 1910. Ole would marry again on 28 October 1915 to Flora Dever née Luken, but they didn't stay married long and were divorced. My suspicions... she had 4 of her own children, maybe 10 more were too many for her. Ole would marry a third time. On 21 March 1921, Ole would marry Ragna Bertha Iverson. Born in 1882, this was Ragna's first marriage. By 1921 there were only four of the original ten children still at home. Ole would live until age 90, dying on 14 March 1958. He had outlived Ragna as she died eight years earlier on 06 September 1950. Ole was buried in the Evangelical Free Church Cemetery, in Hawick, MN, near his home and alongside both Matilde and Ragna. Ole's son Edwin Palmer Emerson, continued working the family farm. In 1971, with Edwin at the helm, this family-owned farm was designated as a Century farm. At that time it had been in the family for three generations.
Reinert Immanuel Emerson - Reinert was born on 18 December 1870. He would play and then work alongside his father and older brother on the family farm even after he was married. He married Dora Elisa Nelson on 23 July 1897. Their first three children would be born there on the Emerson family farm and then in 1903 their little family would pack up and move to their new homestead in Toring Township, Ward County, North Dakota. Reinert Immanuel Emerson was my late cousin Ed's mother's father... Ed's grandfather. There are a number of articles already written about the life and stories of Reinert and Dora. You may want to visit these; I introduced Reinert here.
Ida Malene Emerson - Ida Malene was the first daughter of the family and she was born on 24 January 1873. It was fun to have a girl baby in the family. Ida grew up right there on the family farm and at the age of 23 married Paul Olson. Paul was born in Norway and together they would farm, first near Ida's folks'. In total, Ida and Paul would have nine children. Between 1910 and 1920 they would leave Minnesota for Berthold, Ward County, North Dakota. Here they would rent a farm to work. Their children were Emma (1897-1921), Ruth (1898-1983), Joseph (1900-1929), Inger Gertrude (1902-1981), Reinart Oliver (1904-1971), Esther M. (1906-2002), Edna Sophie (1908-2003), Alfred Johan (1911-1983), Ruby Grace (1913-2006). Paul would die on 31 December 1923. Ida would not remarry and in 1930 she was living in the nearby town of Berthold with her remaining children, where she owned her home. Then in 1940, she was living in Minot, Ward County, North Dakota with Inger, her son Joseph Olson's widow. Ida would die there in Minot on 15 Aug 1942 and would be buried next to her husband, Paul at the Wildrose Cemetery, one-half mile west of Berthold, Ward County, ND.
Christopher Andreas Emerson - Christopher was born on 16 March 1874. Christopher, called "Chris" most of the time, would also become a farmer. On 20 July 1889 Chris would marry Karen Bergetta "Carrie" Johnson, born 07 March 1881. They were married at her parent's home in Stearns County, Minnesota. For a while they would farm in Irving Township, Kandiyohi County, near his parent's farm. It was here that their six children were born. Their children were: Laura Christinse (1900-1995), Reuben Tevine (1904-1998), Frances Viola (1908-2005), Ester Mae (1910-1991), Mable Grace (1912-2000), and Joyce Irene (1917-2006). After the children were born they would purchase a farm in Hendrickson Township, Hubbard County, Minnesota. Carrie would die 13 February 1932 in Hubbard County, Minnesota. Between the years 1935-1940, Christ would leave the farm in Hubbard County and begin to lodge with different folks. In 1940 we find he is a retired lodger, having returned to Kandiyohi County. Chris would die on 28 August 1955, in Park Rapids, Hubbard County. He was buried next to Carrie in the Evergreen Cemetery, LaPorte, Hubbard County, Minnesota.
Oline Sophie "Lina" Emerson - The youngest daughter, Oline "Lina" was born on 26 February 1876. Like her older siblings, Lina grew up on the family farm and when she was 23, on 25 April 1899 she would marry Haagen A. Johnson. Norwegian Haagen was a recent widow with a young son named Eddie. The three - Haagen, Carrie and Eddie would be found in the 1900 US Census in Union Grove Township, Meeker County, Minnesota; where Haagen was farming his own his farm. Lina and Haagen would have five children. They were Ida Regina (1901-1926), Laurenza Agnette Caroline (1903-1998), Henry Orville (1905-1991), Anna Sophia (1907-1993) and Infant Johnson (1908-1908). In 1905, Haaken is working as a Blacksmith in Irving, Kandiyohi, Minnesota. Tragedy happened to this family, maybe it was the death of their baby daughter, or somethin else. In 1910 the US Census would find Haagen living as a boarder in the Jacob Michaelson household, he was still married, living on his own income, living with others. In this same census report, Lina is now an inmate at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls, MN. This would remain as the situation for Lina and Haagen until their deaths. Lina was an inmate or patient first at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls and then at the State Hospital in Anoka, MN. Haagen died on 29 January 1918 in Meeker County, Minnesota. Lina would stay institutionalized until her death from cirrhosis of the liver, on 04 February 1934. This would happen at Anoka, Anoka County. Minnesota. Lina would be buried next to Haagen in the Evangelical Free Church Cemetery; the same cemetery where her brother, Ole Tobias, and his wife are buried.
Syver Emerson - Syver, the Emerson's youngest son was born on 14 July 1878. There is little documented about him. It is thought that he died young. We know him to be included in the 1880 US Census with the rest of his family, he was age two. By the 1900 census he is not included. Unfortunately, no records of him as an adult nor any information about his burial location have been found,
Thank you for stopping by today and letting me once again share with you what we have learned about the Emerson family. As always, if you have additions or changes that can help tell this story, please let me know. I hope you are having a good week and I look forward to next time.
