Amamuensis Monday - Birth Certificate for Marilyn Eilene Brown (1928-2006)

Dear FOLKS,

For today's transcription project I am working on a Birth Certificate. It is the certificate for Marilyn Eileen/Eilene Brown (1928-1930), my mother. If she were still living, we would be celebrating Marilyn's 90th birthday later this month. With that in mind let's begin April by taking a closer look at Marilyn's birth certificate.

This document was newly created by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. In their Boise, ID office, they have blank certificate forms and when you request a copy of a document they look up the microfilm of the original and print it onto their blank stationery. So it is an new/old document. I am pleased that it contains a copy of the original.

The form that was filled in at the time of Marilyn's birth was a fill-in-the-blanks form. The portions of this document that are from the contemporary stationery form, I will show these in GREEN font.  The handwritten portions that were added to the original 1930 form, I am showing these in a RED font. My comments, for clarity purposes, are surrounded by square brackets [ ].

Remarks:

So what is Ophthalmia Neonatorum? According to Wikipedia.com, it is a form of conjunctivitis, a type of neonatal infection contracted by newborns during delivery. The baby's eyes are contaminated during passage through the birth canal from a mother infected with either gonorrhoea or chlamydia, which are both common STDs. I noticed that birth certificates of the time, and more recent all have bit of information included. I am not sure when birth certificates began requiring this.

A middle name question...After I saw this birth certificate for the first time, Mom told me that as a young girl she arbitrarily decided to change the spelling of her middle name from Eilene to Eileen. She was consistent with this modified spelling, I never saw it written any other way, than Eileen, until I saw this certificate.

I find it odd that on this document, the same name is found on the physician's and registrar's signature lines. In the 1930 US Federal Census, I found a James L. Reynolds, whose occupation is physician in Emmett. For some reason Mom's doctor appears to have signed on both lines. Perhaps he was so instructed and did this on many birth certificates.

Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks, guys.

I am reminded that transcribing helps me to learn what a document contains. I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over an item; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. Transcribing helps me to slow down; to capture all aspects of the paper in hand. It also gives me a better opportunity to share the document with you.

I hope you too enjoyed reviewing this certificate and that you have a good week. Thank you for stopping by.
