Darlene's Genealogy

Daring Darlene to Tell

Dear FOLKS,

I have been pursuing my elusive and shy ancestors since my children were small. One school day, I think during her third or fourth grade, our daughter came home with the homework assignment to make a family chart much like the one I have attached below. I realized that we were leaving too many blanks on that chart she took back to school a few days later, but we did the best we could.

Since that time, I have been pursuing my ancestors. I have found that our ethnicities come from a variety of places. Norway, Denmark, Germany, England and Ireland are those I am currently aware of. Some branches have been in America only since the 1870s, others have been here since the Revolutionary War and these include a number of different states. So there is a lot of variety to learn and read about.

To tell my genealogy, I should theoretically start off with me. To accomplish that, I'll share a photo when I was one-year-old.

Over the past recent weeks, I have told some of my parents. If you would like to read the article I posted about my dad, William Richard Johnson (1930-2010), click here. Then too, if you would like to read the article I posted about my mother, Marilyn Eileen Brown (1928-2006) click here.

My next plans are to begin telling fuller details of my grandparents. I will climb my tree a direct ancestor at a time, stopping along the way to tell the stories that pertain to the highlighted individual.

I want to follow the Ahnentafel Numbering System. This system was popularized by a German genealogist in the late 1800s. It is a numbering identification took, where you assign yourself as Number 1, your father is Number 2, your mother is Number 3, your paternal grandfather is Number 4, and so on. In this system, a person's father is always twice the person's number and his spouse is twice plus one. (1)

I'll begin with my paternal grandparents, who a part of generation #3. I will skip myself  (Generation #1) and my parents (Generation #2).

Here is a family chart of my extended family. Following that, is a simple name chart of Generations #3, #4 and #5. Next week we'll start traversing this chart a person at a time, stopping along the way as we can when stories are there to tell.
