Dear FOLKS,
Here it is the beginning of a new work week for many people and I want to start this week off by transcribing a document that is important to my family research.
Here it is the beginning of a new work week for many people and I want to start this week off by transcribing a document that is important to my family research.
Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks guys.
Transcribing helps me to learn what a document contains. I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over an item; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. Transcribing helps me to slow down and "smell the roses."
The document I am transcribing today is the obituary of Olaus "Ole" Ostrom. Olaus was my 2x great-grandfather.
-------- transcription begins -------
Ole Ostrom, a resident of Grant county for the last forty-two years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. Nims, in Elbow Lake last Thursday, July 17. Mr. Ostrom has suffered from paralysis for the past two years.
Ole Ostrom was born at Stavenger [sic], Norway, September 30, 1850. He came to this country in 1871, living first at Waseca, Minn. There he was married to Tolina G. Paulson, September 19, 1873. In 1882 they moved to Grant county where they made their home on a farm about three and a half miles north of Elbow Lake until last October. Since October, 1923, Mr. Ostrom has lived at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nims.
Mr. Ostrom is survived by his wife, and five sons and three daughters: John Ostrom, Drumhiller [sic], Alberta, Can., Mrs. Anna Haner, Douglas N. D., Mrs. Elsie Nims, Elbow Lake, Theodore Ostrom, Drake, N. D., Oscar Ostrom, Douglas N. D., Mrs. Olina Ehelers [sic], Douglas, N.D., P. B. Ostrom, Elbow Lake, and Carl J. Ostrom, Empress, Alberta, Can. He also has a brother living in Norway.
he [The] funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Ness Lutheran church of which Mr. Ostrom was a member. Rev. O. G. Aasen conducted the services. Interment was made in the Ness Cemetery. The pall bearers were Albert Scheaffer, H. Setran, H. Jebe, J. Craft, G. I. Island and Ole Pikop.

For those following along with the series of Ed's Day Wednesdays posts I am writing, Olaus Ostrom is a common direct ancestor shared between my late "cousin" Ed Ostrom and me. Olaus was Ed's great-grandfather and my second great-grandfather. Olaus' son Oscar Ostrom was Ed's grandfather and Olaus' daughter Anna Ostrom Haner was my great-grandmother.
