Amanuensis Monday - Oscar Ostrom's ND Auction (1938)

Dear FOLKS,

Here it is the beginning of a new work week for many people and I want to start this week off by transcribing a document that is important to my family research.

Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musings. Thanks guys.

I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over a record or document; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. Transcribing helps me to slow down and "smell the roses."

Today I am transcribing the Auction Sale Register that was filled in during the 1938 auction that took place at the homestead of Oscar Ostrom after he decided to move to Oregon. This auction helped to finance that move and the setup of his new farm.

One day I was visiting a friend named Dottie/Dorcas. The purpose of the visit was to meet and interview a living person who had lived in, and actually attended many of the Douglas summer reunions.  I shared with her these same photos. She said in delight, "That is my father's handwriting." Her father, O.J. Hillesland was often the bookkeeper at a number of these rural auctions. I can tell that he was under a lot of pressure to keep up with the activities of the auction as the any misspellings are a sign of stress.

This E.G. Oswald booklet was designed specifically for the rural auctions of the time. It provides a system to track the sale of items throughout the auction. The first section is an item by item list of the sequential number of what was sold, the name of who won the bid, the amount of the winning bid and a description of the item sold.

Most of the transcribing was completed by my late cousin, Ed Ostrom.  At one point I can remember Ed telling me about this register and asked for pointers from me on how to go about the work at hand to transcribe this document. To make items less confusing for us to read, a comma was inserted between Buyer's last name and first name, Then dollar signs ($) and decimal points (.) were added for clarity in the Amount column.

The transcription of Section One begins here and continues from page 1 to page 8. The winning bid is entered line by line.

Photographs of Section Two begins here. I did not try to transcribe this section as it is mostly graphics, but wanted to share it with you. These pages are alphabetically, pre-labeled much like an address book. (Or have address books become a thing of the past?) As someone wins a bid, the items are first added to the next open line in Section One. The bid is next entered on the appropriate page based on the beginning letter of the buyer's last name. The name is entered and the amount of the bid is added. Each subsequent win, for that person, is also entered under their name. After the last item is auctioned off or if a person wants to leave early, the items they won during the bidding are added up.

No W-X-Y-Z page(s) were found; it is possible that the page was blank and Ed didn't make a photograph of a blank page. No bidders with the missing letters were found listed.

Section Three is the "Settlement" section. You'll notice that Oscar Ostrom is listed first. This is the final sum of the bids listed as "pd". As a bid was won, some paid immediately, these sales were added up with under Oscar's name.

Note to self: Add an entry on my To-Do List to find a copy, if one exists, for a newspaper advertisement or classified that holds the information of this auction.  I have been unable to find the date this event was held.  I would expect to find such an article during the warmer months in the " Minot Daily News," Minot, North Dakota newspaper.
