Amanuensis Monday - 1936 Marriage Certificate for Oscar Spanswick (1909-1971) and Alice D. Haner (1915-1997)

Dear FOLKS,

Here it is Monday and time for another transcription project. This week I had another document come dropping into my lap, sort of speaking... I recently have been working to clean up my database and in particular, I was looking at Alice Delilah Haner's entry and Ancestry said, "Hey, here is another record for Alice!" and I just had to take a look. Alice was my paternal grandmother, Olena Marie Haner's younger sister. Alice was my grand aunt or many would say, my great aunt. The terms grand aunt and grand uncle are losing favor in current times.

I know that some of my faithful readers are descendants of Alice. As a surprise to them, I decided to share Alice and hubby Oscar Spanswick's marriage certificate.

I have noticed that Oscar's last name has been spelled or typed incorrectly. The index transcribers interpreted the typing as Spanawick and they repeated that same spelling on Oscar's father's name found later on the form too.

A fun thing to note is that apparently, their witnesses to the ceremony were Anna Spanswick and David V. Spanswick. Anna Spanswick would likely be Oscar's mother and David V. Spanswick, Oscar's older brother.

All together we have four family signatures included in this fill-in-the-blanks form. They all appear to be written by the stated individual. It is a nice surprise that bride, Alice D. Haner; groom, Oscar Spanswick, and witnesses Anna Spanswick and David V. Spanswick each wrote their names.

Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musingsThanks, guys.

Transcribing helps me to learn what a document contains. I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over an item; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. Transcribing helps me to slow down and "smell the flowers," and to capture all aspects of the paper in hand. It also gives me a better opportunity to share the document with you.

Thank you for stopping by today to learn of yet another document I am proud to share with you. Hope your week starts off well.
