Researching Anne Malene Andreasdatter (1829-1855)

Ed's Day Wednesday

Dear FOLKS,

Today we'll continue to learn more about Anne Malene Andreasdatter, born in Norway, December 13, 1829, at the family's home that was a part of the Østrem/Austhreim farm. The portion of this farm where her family lived was known as Bruk Nr. 2. Anne was my cousin Ed's 2x great-grandmother and the mother of Olaus Ommundsen. Olaus was the immigrant to America for this branch of Ed's family. I can claim this relationship too, as Anne Malene was my 3x great-grandmother. To read the previous article I have shared of Anne's story, please click here.

The other day I ran across a very easy-to-read explanation that describes the differences between the larger gaard/gård, which was the Austhreim farm and a bruk, which is a small portion of a larger gaard/gård. It is interesting to read this as it better explains how land was broken up and given, sold, leased or rented to others, usually family in Norway in the 1800s. You can find this article by clicking here. I think you will also get a sense of why so many Norwegians came to America for the opportunity of having their own farm during this time. I am sure much is the reason why so many did come.

Anne was born as discussed above on the family's Bruk Nr. 2, when she married Ommund Ommundsen she moved to her husband's location that was the nearby Bruk Nr. 6, all positions of the Østrem/Austhreim farm. There are no known photos of Anne, and I have none identified as taken on Bruk Nr. 2. There are photos available for Bruk Nr. 6, some of which I share today. There are only a few records I found (so far) for Anne Malene. She only lived a short twenty-six years and she lived her entire life in Norway. Both contribute to the inability for me to have found many records. But let me share with you what I have, as they are gems.

Next, we find that Anne Malene is a teenager of fifteen and an entry for her is found as she completes instruction in a Confirmation class. Since her birthday is in December, many of the others in her group are younger than she is. That is of little importance as she attended classes in the rotation as early as she could.

Not far from the Østrem/Austhreim farm is the town of Moi. This community is where the church that Anne Malene worshipped is located. Moi is found at the northern end of the lake Lundevatnet, one of the deepest lakes in Norway.  When cousin Ed Ostrom was in Norway during a trip he made in 2008, the following is a photo he took. What beautiful scenery our Anne Malene was able to see so very near her home.

Ommund and Anne Malene were known to have had a few head of sheep on their small farm, Bruk Nr. 6, also know as Neset.  Neset is "Nose" in Norwegian, describing the terrain, a flat landscape protruding from the mountainside. The following photo would have looked very familiar to Anne Malene.

Closer to home for Anna Malene is a waterfall that is near her home. What a green and beautiful this place is.
