Ed's Day Wednesday
Dear FOLKS,
How has your week been? Since it is Wednesday, I wanted to share with you more information I have learned of Ommund Ommundsen who was born on the Østrem/Austreim farm in the Lund area, Rogaland County (Fylke) in southwestern Norway. We have been learning about Ommund over the last few Wednesdays. If you would like to review that information, click here and here. This week I want to tell you about Ommund's three wives.

Omund and Rakkel would have a daughter whose name was Else. Else was born 05 April 1849. Her birth and baptism record reflects that at the time of her birth the family was residing on the Haukland farm. Perhaps this was before Ommund establishes himself as a gaard [farmer] of Østrem Bruk #6.
It is not known when and under what circumstances that Omund and Rakkel's marriage broke apart. I have searched a number of times for a possible death record for Rakkel, but nothing has yet been found. There is speculation within some of the write-ups about Rakkel that they divorced, but nothing backs that up as evidence. There is no mention of their daughter Else in follow-on documents that contain Ommund. Perhaps the "X" that shows in the last column of the above marriage was made there when Ommund married a second time.
Marriage #2 - 02 August 1850
I next find a church record of Ommund marrying Malene Andreasdatter [Anna Malene Andreasdatter]. It is Anna's first marriage. Here is the church record for that event. The columns are not labeled in this recording, but we can use the previous record to know what the headings should be.

Ommund and Anna Malene would remain married until her death on 25 March 1855. They would settle at Bruk #6 (Neset) [sub-farm No. 6, translated as "The Nose" as the land's formation is a flat plat standing on the side of a mountain with steep drop-offs all the way around]. During their relatively short time as a married couple, they had four children. Their son Olaus was born on 20 September 1850 and Olaus [Ed's great-grandfather Olaus would travel to America when he was 20.] The next son, Andreas was born on 28 December 1852 and died on 22 February 1856, less than one year after his mother's death. Next born to Ommund and Anna Malene were twin sons, Andreas Michel and Bærent, who were born on 17 March 1855. Anna Malene would die only eight days later, likely due to complications of the babies' delivery. Twin son, Andreas Michel would also die soon after his birth. His death occurred on 20 June 1855. Bærent would grow and have his own family, becoming the land owner of his father's land and farm when Ommund retired.
Marriage #3 - 18 August 1855
Ommund was now a widower with very small children and he would next marry Anna Thoresdatter. Here is the church record for this event.

Ommund's third marriage was more enduring than the previous two. It is expected that this was Ane's only marriage. Their marriage lasted until Ane died on 24 September 1883 at the age of 64. Ommund and Ane would have two children. Andreas Michel who was born on 19 July 1858 and died a few days later on 04 August 1858. Cause of death of this little Andreas Michel, like his other children is unknown. During this period of time average folks were poor and struggled to keep food available. Sickness and disease at this time didn't have the cures we now have today. Then on 16 October 1860 a baby girl, Anna Malene was born. Anna Malene, like Olaus and Bærent, would grow to adulthood.
Hope you are having a good week and enjoyed our close look into this documentation conflict. I look forward to our next time.
