Amanuensis Monday - Delayed Birth Certificate for Inez Viola Shinn (1899-1968)

Dear FOLKS,

It is again time to transcribe a document of importance to me for Amanuensis Monday. Today I have chosen a recent discovery. It is another of those nice surprise. Today's project is the Delayed Birth Certificate that was issued to Inez Viola Shinn in 1942. When I saw this document I immediately recognized my maternal grandmother Inez's, my mother's mother's handwriting as I have seen it many times. Seeing it truly warmed my heart as I recollected my sweet memories of her.

By the 1920s more all states were using birth certificates as proof of identification. Many folks born in the late 1800s and early 1900s were born at a time when birth certificates were not used. Now they were finding that they needed one, or they were hearing of others that needed one. This created the need for what was called a "delayed" birth certificate. There were efforts made to have delayed certificates generated while a needed witness was still living.

In 1942, Inez would complete an application for a Social Security Number and soon after she also arranges to have this delayed birth certificate created, with her mother, Sarah Jane (Parr) Shinn signing as a witness to her birth event. This document also has Sarah's signature and more that she has written when she makes swear the information contained to be true. Two generations of handwriting samples in one document!

It appears the Inez and her mother Sarah Jane, both, contributed by writing in the required information on this fill-in-the-blanks form. To visually explain the different handwriting, I have used pink font for Sarah Jane's handwriting, blue for Inez's and red for the others who wrote on the form. For additional clarity, I also surrounded my comments with square brackets [ ].

Amanuensis Monday is a weekly blog theme that was started by John Newmark, the author of TransylvanianDutch blog. John defines Amanuensis as "A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another." I also appreciate the good work and format examples of San Diego genealogist Randy Seaver of the blog Genea-musingsThanks, guys.

Transcribing helps me to learn what a document contains. I have learned over time that I have a tendency to "skim" over an item; a bad trait for a researcher who needs to learn even the smallest details documented records contain. Transcribing helps me to slow down and "smell the flowers," and to capture all aspects of the paper in hand. It also gives me a better opportunity to share the document with you.

Thank you for stopping by today to learn of yet another document I am proud to share with you. Hope your week starts off well.
