Ommund and Anne Malene have a family and more

Ed's Day Wednesday

Dear FOLKS,

Today I'll continue telling what I have learned and what my late cousin Ed Ostrom shared about the lives of Ommund Ommundsen of Østrim/Austrheim, Bruk #6 (Neset) and Anne Malene Andreasdatter also of Østrim/Austrheim farm, Bruk #2.

Ommund Ommundsen was born on 09 July 1820 and Anne Malene Andeasdatter was born on 13 December 1829. Ommund's birth, I told in an earlier story; it can be found by clicking here. Anne Malene's birth, I told at a later time; it can be found here. Theirs would be his second marriage and it was her first.

Their wedding was held on 02 August 1850 and they settled into Østrim/Austrheim, Bruk #6, Ommund's farm and began their family not long after their wedding.

Here is a little about each of their children:

1. Olaus Ommundsen was born on 30 September 1850. It is not known if he was born at home or at the home of the local midwife. The records of the time are not clear. The idea of the event occurring at the midwife's home comes from a passage in a 1934 interview that was held with Olaus' widow. Repeating from this interview, Olaus' birthplace was "Sundsorgen Moi per Stavanger Amt i Norge." That roughly translates to a medical place in Moi. The town of Moi is about 7.5 miles from the Østrem farm. Stavanger Amt is today Rogaland Fylke; as county names changed in 1919. Norge is Norway. It was a common practice that if a midwife was going to be needed by more than one expectant mother, the mothers-to-be would be brought to the home of the wid-wife. There she could attend to the deliveries.

At the age of 20, Olaus would leave Norway for America and he would soon change his name to Olaus Ostrem. Soon after his arrival on 19 September 1873 in southern Minnesota he would meet and marry Toline Gunnulsdatter Paulsen who was born and emigrated from Lunde, a small community near Telemark on the opposite side of Norway. Olaus and Toline would have ten children: Ole Andreas (1874-1894), John Gabriel (1875-1954), Anna Malene (1877-1959), Elsie Gurine (1879-1969), Theodore (1880-1961), Olina (1882-1962), Oscar (1884-1973), Gunnild Pauline (1886-1911), Paul Bertil (1888-1962), Carl Johan (1890-1977).

Olaus, like his father, would remain a farmer. Olaus would obtain a homestead in Pomme de Terre Township, Grant County, Minnesota, near the town of Elbow Lake. On 17 July 1924, Olaus would die from the effects of a stroke he had two years earlier. Olaus was my cousin Ed's great-grandfather through Oscar (1884-1973). Olaus was my 2x great-grandfather through Anna Malene (1877-1959). It was fun to realize that she was named after her grandmother, Olaus' mother. You can learn more about Olaus by clicking here.

2. Andreas Ommundsen was born on 28 Dec 1852. Unfortunately, he died while a toddler on 26 February 1856 and was buried a few days later on 02 March. The church register does not mention any cause.

3. (twin) Andreas Michel Ommundsen was born on 17 March 1855. He survived only a short three and one-half months after his birth. He died on 30 June 1855 and was buried the next day, on 01 July. The church registering his death does not list the cause of death.

4. (twin) Bernt Ommundsen was also born on 17 March 1855. Bernt survived childhood. I have found his first name written a number of ways including, Berent, Bærent, Berint and Bernt. He remained his entire life living on Bruk #6. Like his older brother, he appears to have been a farmer, following his father's occupation. He married Signe Michaelsdatter on 16 April 1880. Signe was born on 16 February 1850 on Haukland, a nearby farm. Signe was the daughter of Michael Christiansen and Sara Jonette Sigbjornsdatter. Bernt and Signe had four children. Their names were Anne Malene (1881-1897), Karl Bertin (1883-?), Sivert Mikal (1885-?) and Ole Martin (1888-?). Bernt and Signe would die sometime after 1900 as they and their family are entered in the 1900 Norway Census. As of today, Bernt's death date is unknown. No more is known about his wife Signe either, but time and more research efforts on my part are likely to change that. I have learned that sons Sivert Mikal and Ole Martin would co-own Bruk #6 (Neset) after it was left to them by their parents.

Their mother, Anne Malene Andreasdatter would pass away on 25 March 1855. Since this was only 8 days after the birth of her twin sons, it is my current thinking that she died as the result of a difficult birth. I am hoping to have a translation of her death/burial record and if there is information there, I will include it as a transcription project on a future Amanuensis Monday.

I am including a photo of the Lund Church cemetery. This is the likely place where Anne Malene Andreasdatter was buried. I am thinking that this too is the place where in February 1895, her husband Ommund Ommundsen was buried. What a beautifully quiet and serene place this is. Stones marking the graves of Anne Malene and Ommund won't be found. Due to limitations of plowable land in Norway, a gravesite is typically reused after 20 years. Within this churchyard cemetery are found headstones with the name of  "Østrem" engraved, so this confirms to be the likely place for these folks to be buried too.

Malene Andreasdatter and Ommund Ommundsen's final
resting place. Photo from Ed Ostrom's collection.

I am hoping that as time goes by more will be added to what we know about Anne Malene and others of this family. In the meantime, it is time that we wish her, "Hvil i fred, min kjære forfedre" [Rest in peace, my dear ancestor].

I hope your week is going well. Thank you so much for stopping by. It has been my pleasure to share what I have found of Anne Malene Andreasdatter's story.
