Researching Gunnuld Paulsen (1801-1875)

Ed's Day Wednesday

Dear FOLKS,

Today we are going to return to the story of Gunnuld Paulsen who was born in Lunde, Telemark County, Norway at the family's Kittilsrud farm. Gunnuld was my late cousin Edwin Ostrom's 2x great-grandfather from Ed's father's side. Gunnuld was my 3x great-grandfather, also from my paternal side.

Last month, I introduced Gunnuld when I posted "#18 - Gunnuld Paulsen of Kittilsrud (1801-1875)." You are welcome to review that article by clicking here.

Today I want to share with you the documents and records that I have been able to find about Gunnuld. Gunnuld was the father of nine known children. His fourth child, Toline Gunnuldsdatter was the common ancestor that Ed and I share. This daughter would emigrate to America and it was here that she went by the name of Toline "Lena" G. Paulson. The initial "G." replaced Gunnuldsdatter. She then picked up Paulson, a form of her father's surname.

Three of Gunnud's children are known to have come to America and did the same name change. They were Paul G. Paulson (b. 1840), John G. Paulson (b. 1841) and our, Toline G. Paulson (b. 1843).

Gunnuld was the son of Paul Halversen (1767-1853) of the Steinsrud Farm and Else Gunnuldsdatter (1763-after 1801) of the Tveitan farm, both in the area of the Lunde church parish.

Here is the entry in the Lunde parish church that shows Gunnuld's birth and baptism. It was entered into the section of the parish record book called the "Chronological List" on page 148 or for the year 1801. The writing within the image appears to be Gothic, an older style of handwriting. This makes it more difficult to translate. Also, the guide for explaining the church's register column headings is not currently available to me. Rootsweb, where it is stored, is under modification. I'll pick up the pieces that I can make out. If any of my Norwegian readers want to help with corrections, please let me know what I should change.

The next document found for Gunnuld was a list of boys who were confirmed in the church on 10 March 1816. This happened at the Lunde Parish church. This document is a bit easier to read, but the column headings are still problematic.

On December 26, 1839, Gunnuld Paulsen would marry Gunnild  Johnsdatter from the Sættendal farm and they would live first on the Lunde farm and then between 1946 and 1850, they would move to the Trasekjær farm, where they raised their children and worked at farming there.  I'll show their marriage record in an upcoming post.

In 1865, Norway would hold a general population census that shows the following information for the Gunnuld Paulsen household. It also shares what crops and livestock they had.

Gunnuld would have a long life but as with all things, he passed away on 11 May 1875. At his death, Gunnuld was 73 years, 7 months and nine days old. The record does not say, so it is likely that he died of natural causes while at home. The following is his death record.

All of these records, I found while using the Digitalarkivet website provided by the National Archives of Norway [https://digitalarkivet.no/].

The photos at the top of this post show the area where Gunnuld was living at the time of his death. These were taken on 20 August 2008. So serene and beautiful there.

Thank you for stopping by today. I hope you enjoyed learning more about Gunnuld Paulsen. There are unfortunately no known photos of him. At the time of his death cameras were not plentiful. Hope your week is going well and I look forward to having you join me here next time.
