A Young Gunnild Johnsdatter (1818-1890)

Ed's Day Wednesday

Dear FOLKS,

Hope your week is going well. Today I want to share with you some of the documents I have found for Gunnild Johnsdatter. Most are from the local parish church register in Lunde, Telemark, Norway. Gunnild was my cousin Ed Ostrom's 2x great-grandmother and she was my 3x. Last week I shared her life's timeline. You can read that article by clicking here.

Gunnild was born on 28 May 1818 on the family's Sættendal farm that is very near Lunde. She was the daughter of Jon Tollevsen and Tolline Halvorsdatter. Below, I have included maps that better describe the location of their family dwelling.

I still haven't found how many siblings Gunnild had but I learned that she and her next older sister Anne were confirmed at the same time. Their entries of this event are next to one another on the church register. Not a lot is mentioned about schooling for girls during this period of time. Except for the lessons taught to the young folks about age 15 for church confirmation. It is likely that girls were taught cooking, cleaning, preserving food, weaving, hand sewing, knitting, childcare, helping around the family farm, etc. The things that were needed to care for a home and family during a simpler but harsher time. The next image shows Gunnild and Anne's entry when being confirmed.

It is not known to me if these photographs actually contain items that Gunnild would have seen or touched. We know that Gunnild was born in 1818, that is two hundred years ago this year. But these are the closest connection I (so far) have been able to make with her as no known earlier photos of her exist.

I know it is currently late in the day on Wednesday, even late here in my local Pacific Time Zone. Let me say that I hope you had a good day. I know I did. All the fun distracted me from writing earlier. But thankfully I made my deadline. Thank you so much for stopping by today. You are an important part of making these Wednesday articles happen.
